Understanding Vision Benefits: What Most Patients Don’t Realize
It has been a while since I’ve written a blog, and I wanted to get back to it. In the past, I’ve used these blogs to highlight different aspects of eye care, eyewear, and other topics that matter to my patients. This time, I wanted to stay within the world of optometry while discussing something most people know very little about: vision benefits.
Many people refer to these plans as “vision insurance,” but that term is actually somewhat misleading. Vision benefits are not the same as medical insurance. Instead, they function more like discount programs that provide limited allowances for services and products such as eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses.
These plans are often offered by employers as part of employee compensation packages, and they can absolutely be valuable to patients by helping offset some of the costs associated with eye care and eyewear.
What many patients do not realize, however, is how these plans work from the provider side.
Over the years, reimbursement rates from vision benefit companies have steadily declined. Despite this, many independent practices continue to participate with these plans because we hope patients will choose us not only for their eye exams, but also for their eyewear needs. Vision plans often justify their low reimbursement rates by suggesting that practices will make up the difference through eyewear purchases made by patients using their benefits.
Sometimes that works out well. Sometimes it does not.
The eyewear marketplace has become incredibly crowded and competitive. Patients now have countless online and retail options when shopping for glasses and contact lenses. As a result, many independent practices provide exams while patients purchase their eyewear elsewhere.
At Eyes in the Park, we work very hard to create a high-quality experience for our patients. Maintaining that experience requires significant investment in staff, technology, equipment, inventory, and office space. We are proud to offer personalized care and a full-service environment where patients can receive comprehensive eye care and expert help with their eyewear needs all in one place.
We deeply appreciate the many patients who support our practice by trusting us with both their eye care and their eyewear.
Of course, every patient has the right to shop wherever they choose for glasses or contact lenses. We completely understand that. At the same time, it is important for patients to understand that independent practices rely on both professional services and optical sales to continue providing the level of care and experience they value.
If your primary goal is simply to use your vision benefits for an exam while purchasing materials elsewhere, just know that independent practices like ours are best supported by patients who value and utilize the full scope of services we provide.
Thank you, as always, for supporting local independent eye care.
